Are the Dallas Cowboys Missing One Last Piece? Amari Cooper Could Be the Answer
Following the NFL Draft, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed strong confidence in the team’s current roster, stating that it’s “a really good way to go after a Super Bowl.” The Cowboys addressed both offensive and defensive needs during the draft, but one question remains: Who will consistently support Dak Prescott in the wide receiver corps beyond CeeDee Lamb?
Although Dallas passed on drafting a wide receiver, Jones has hinted that the team may not be done making moves. “The train has not left the station,” he remarked, leaving the door open for a potential free-agent signing at WR.

“As it relates to Amari Cooper, I would not be surprised if that happens.”

One name gaining traction is Amari Cooper. Having played four seasons with the Cowboys and earning two Pro Bowl nods during his time, Cooper is currently a free agent. Yahoo Sports’ Jori Epstein suggested that Dallas could bring him back—perhaps on an incentive-based deal, considering Cooper is 30 years old and may be more open to a lower base salary after making substantial earnings in his career.
As of now, Cooper’s market value sits around $18 million annually, according to Spotrac. If he returns, it would likely be on a much more team-friendly contract.
However, Cooper’s time in Dallas didn’t end smoothly. Reports from his earlier departure cited tension with then-head coach Mike McCarthy, concerns about his practice habits, and lingering injury issues. Whether both sides can move past those issues remains to be seen.
Dak Prescott’s Return
Meanwhile, the Cowboys are also watching their star quarterback closely. After signing Dak Prescott to a massive four-year, $240 million extension—with $231 million guaranteed—he suffered a hamstring injury in Week 9 of the 2024 season. The injury ended his year early and raised new concerns about his durability, especially considering previous injuries to the same leg and a thumb fracture in 2022.
Despite those setbacks, Dallas appears confident in Prescott’s recovery. On Tuesday, the team posted a photo on Instagram of Dak working out alongside CeeDee Lamb, simply captioned: “back to work.” It was a strong signal that the quarterback is on track to make his return for the upcoming season.
What’s Next for Dallas?
With Prescott returning, CeeDee Lamb healthy, and the draft adding depth, the Cowboys may be just one piece away from having a complete championship-caliber offense. Bringing back a familiar and skilled veteran like Amari Cooper might be the bold move needed to make a serious Super Bowl push.
Whether or not that reunion happens, one thing is certain—Dallas isn’t finished yet.
