Emma Raducanu’s Surprise Coaching Twist: “I Bumped Into Him in a Corridor

Unexpected Reunion in Miami
Emma Raducanu has revealed the unusual way she reunited with former coach Mark Petchey—by bumping into him at the Miami Open. The 2021 US Open champion, who has faced a carousel of coaches in recent years, reached out to Petchey after a chance meeting in a corridor at the Dolphins’ stadium.

“I Was Scared to Ask”
Raducanu admitted she was nervous about asking for help. “Mark was already there, commentating… and then I was like: ‘I need to do this.’ It was me being scared to ask: ‘Can you help?’” she told The Guardian. Petchey, who had coached her briefly back in 2020, agreed to work with her around his broadcasting schedule.

Fallout with Vladimir Platenik
Her decision came shortly after parting ways with Slovak coach Vladimir Platenik, just two weeks into their partnership. Raducanu played only one match under him—a straight-sets loss at Indian Wells—before calling it off. Platenik later revealed she told him she was “feeling stressed,” and he expressed no hard feelings.

Now Eyes on Rome
Currently in Rome for the 2025 Italian Open, Raducanu will open her campaign against qualifier Maya Joint. Fans are eager to see if this latest coaching setup can help her regain the spark that stunned the world in New York just four years ago.
