Justin Thomas had a solid start at the Truist Championship, shooting a 4-under 66 while paired with Rory McIlroy. His round, which included six birdies and two bogeys, placed him tied for 25th at the no-cut signature event hosted at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
But Thomas’s ambitions extended beyond the golf course—and into the city’s famed food scene.
After wrapping up his round and exiting the scoring area, Thomas headed straight to Angelo’s Pizzeria, a local favorite known not just for its pizzas but especially for its beloved sandwiches. For those familiar with Philadelphia, Angelo’s reputation speaks for itself. And for Thomas, the trip was clearly worth it.
The PGA star was seen indulging in a massive Philly cheesesteak—an experience fellow golfer Keith Mitchell documented in an Instagram story. Mitchell drove 35 minutes from the course to Angelo’s and snapped some candid shots of Thomas fully immersed in his meal. Thomas himself reposted a picture with a caption joking about his failed attempt to eat only half, writing, “I had full intentions of eating half. I didn’t. I inhaled all of it.”
The PGA Tour’s social media team quickly picked up on the moment and shared it on their X (formerly Twitter) account, prompting a flurry of reactions from fans.
Many viewed the indulgence lightheartedly, suggesting that after a strong performance, a reward was in order. One fan joked about Thomas’s appearance mid-bite: “Knees together, belly out, face full of food—absolutely evil work by Keith.” Another teased him about his weight, while a third referenced his apparel sponsor, saying, “Good thing Greyson carries larger sizes now.”
The images drew attention not only because of the humorous moment but also due to Thomas’s history with dietary restrictions. Just two years ago, around this same event, Thomas had publicly shared his decision to go gluten-free and dairy-free in an effort to improve his game during the summer. He had admitted back then that he missed traditional comfort foods, saying he’d do almost anything for a pizza drenched in ranch. Whether he still adheres to that strict diet is unclear, but his recent stop at Angelo’s suggests he’s allowing himself the occasional treat.
Fans debated whether such a heavy meal was a harmless indulgence or potentially risky just days before the upcoming PGA Championship. Some saw it as a deserved break, especially after his recent win at the RBC Heritage that ended a long winless streak. Others questioned the timing, given the physical and mental demands of major tournament preparation.
Regardless, Thomas appears relaxed and confident. He’s set to compete next at Quail Hollow, where he has a solid track record, including five top-10 finishes this season. Other than a missed cut in 2016, he has never placed lower than 26th at the venue, which adds to the optimism surrounding his chances at the PGA Championship.
He is scheduled to tee off on Friday at 11:20 AM from the 10th tee.
