Is This One of the Most Fun Contests in Surfing?
Not every surf competition follows the same mold, and the Single Fin Hoedown stands out as a truly unique event. Originating in 2003 through the efforts of Enrique “Moose” Huerta and the team at Surf Station in St. Augustine, the Hoedown began as a tribute to Florida’s authentic surf culture. Revived in recent years, the event has since become a cherished community tradition, attracting a wide range of participants—from seasoned professionals to emerging talents—all riding vintage or retro-style single-fin boards. These boards represent a time in surfing when the sport was more about personal expression than fierce competition.
The Hoedown isn’t your typical surf contest. Instead of focusing on technical prowess, the judging emphasizes flow, creativity, and overall style. This laid-back approach fuels an atmosphere full of energy and originality. Last weekend’s event followed this same spirit, with surfers competing not just for rankings, but for spontaneous awards sponsored by Dark Seas. Categories included best style, best costume, best ride, best wipeout, and best shared wave—each winner walking away with $50 and a big smile. These quirky prizes kept the vibe playful and full of surprises during every heat.
At the end of the day, three surfers claimed top honors. Kylie Pulcini took first place in the women’s division, while Rasta Rob captured the win in the men’s final. A standout performance by Sebastian Peters earned him a well-deserved honorable mention, and Ko Minks dominated the Dark Seas grom expression session—earning a future spot in next year’s men’s division.
The Single Fin Hoedown is more than just a competition—it’s a celebration of what surfing truly represents: joy, freedom, and community. Since its revival in 2023 by local surfer and organizer Chris Ropero, the event has continued to grow in cultural importance.
Photographer Brandon “Laserwolf” Campbell reflected on the changing landscape of coastal communities, praising St. Augustine for maintaining its authentic surf roots. Unlike many beach towns overtaken by high-income newcomers, this town has preserved its local flavor and surf culture.
Beyond the waves, the Hoedown also offers live music, local food vendors, and a festive beach party atmosphere. It’s a highlight of the St. Augustine surfing calendar, drawing people back year after year and strengthening the bonds within the local surf community.
In an era dominated by high-speed, high-tech competitions, the Single Fin Hoedown offers a breath of fresh, salty air. It reminds everyone—spectators and surfers alike—of the sport’s soulful, carefree beginnings and the enduring power of community stoke.
