Chris Wood’s Return to Golf After Battling Anxiety
Former Ryder Cup hero Chris Wood has opened up about his harrowing battle with chronic anxiety, marking a triumphant return to professional golf after a year away from the game. The 37-year-old Englishman endured a personal and professional low that nearly ended his career.
A Year Away from the Game
Wood took a complete break from golf in 2023 as his mental health deteriorated, calling the experience “hellish.” Anxiety had taken such a toll that he couldn’t continue competing on the DP World Tour.
A Stunning Comeback in Turkey
However, last week brought a turning point. Thanks to a sponsor’s invite, Wood played in the Turkish Airlines Open and stunned the field by not only making the cut for the first time in nearly three years, but also finishing in the top ten. His final round—a spectacular seven-under-par 64—was his best tournament result since 2018.
Overcome with Emotion
Fighting back tears during a post-round interview, Wood shared:
“It’s been horrendous to be honest. Since 2019 I just feel like I’ve been going through hell… I genuinely feel like I’m starting to come back now.”
Support, Belief, and Persistence
Wood credited a small support team at home and the DP World Tour’s medical staff for guiding him through the most difficult period of his life. Despite the setbacks, he said he never lost faith in his ability.
Looking Ahead: Soudal Open and Beyond
Thanks to his top-ten finish, Wood is now in line to compete at the Soudal Open in Belgium. But he’s made it clear: he needs more invitations to keep this comeback alive.
A Message to Tournament Directors
“This is hopefully the first little step forward,” Wood said. “Anyone that wants me at their event, please pick up the phone because I need a few starts this year.”
Focusing on Mental Strength
For now, Wood is focused on staying mentally strong.
“I’ve had so much trauma and I don’t want to go back there. I’m just trying to stay on my mental task. Whether I shoot 75 or 65, I want to tick the box that I stayed focused.”
As his emotional journey inspires the golfing world, Chris Wood’s comeback is far from over—he’s only just getting started.
