Surfing Beyond Limits: Ned Hart and Oscar James Unveil “Frostbite”

At just 18 years old, Ned Hart is already surfing at a level that surpasses his age. Over the last winter, the young Australian took on the powerful and freezing waves of Ireland and Scotland, before wrapping up his season on Hawaii’s legendary North Shore.

A spontaneous meeting with Irish filmmaker Oscar James at the Big Wave Awards in Nazaré quickly led to a full-blown project. Within 24 hours, James was filming Hart riding 20-foot waves at Cliffs. Their chemistry was undeniable, and soon the idea for a surf short was born. Titled Frostbite, the film is set to premiere on May 22 at Beerfarm Brewery in Metricup, Western Australia.

James spoke highly of Hart’s dedication, saying he’s always the first one ready to hit the water. According to him, Hart’s passion and focus set him apart from most surfers he’s worked with. That drive helped keep their sessions consistent and intense, even in harsh winter conditions.

Hart also felt the connection with James was instant. He said the energy between them made it clear that what they were capturing was more than just clips for social media. Although the project brought a bit of stress, he admitted it was an exciting and rewarding challenge.

The pair chased swell after swell, with no time to spare. Eventually, Hart suggested they compile the best footage into a proper edit. With just two months of filming, James crafted a 13-minute highlight reel packed with only the top moments.

During their time at Riley’s, a famous Irish reef break, they unexpectedly ran into Nathan and Ivan Florence. Later, they reunited in Northern Scotland—and this time, John John Florence was there too. For Hart, sharing waves with his childhood heroes in such remote, cold locations was nothing short of surreal.

James recalled the freezing conditions, saying the water was about 48°F and air temperatures often dropped below freezing. Despite the brutal climate, the unique beauty of the locations and the quality of the waves made it all worthwhile.

Hart has been riding with Pyzel surfboards for almost ten years and has spent the last two years on the Florence team. Surfing alongside Nathan, Ivan, and John John was a dream realized. He mentioned his excitement about Nathan visiting Australia soon, looking forward to catching waves together at home.

Frostbite is a milestone project for both Hart and James. With support from Monster Energy, a custom soundtrack by Psycho Serene, and premiere planning help from Adele Hart, the film is set to make a strong impression when it drops.
