Tyler Atkinson Recruitment Battle Heats Up: Georgia vs. Ohio State and More
The Georgia Bulldogs may have missed out on five-star offensive tackle Jackson Cantwell, but they’re now in the thick of another major recruiting showdown. This time, it’s for Tyler Atkinson—the No.1 linebacker in the 2026 class and one of the most sought-after defensive talents in the nation.
According to Chad Simmons of On3, Georgia currently holds the edge, thanks to their home-state appeal. However, powerhouse programs like Ohio State, Oregon, Miami, Auburn, and Clemson are turning up the heat. Ohio State, in particular, is becoming a serious contender.
Ohio State’s Big Play
The Buckeyes have bolstered their appeal with the hiring of NFL veteran Matt Patricia as defensive coordinator. Alongside him, Tim Walton and Ohio State great James Laurinaitis are spearheading a full-court press for Atkinson. The trio recently made a personal visit to Grayson High School, where Atkinson plays, and later spent the evening with his family. Their message was clear—Ohio State isn’t just interested, they’re all in.
Atkinson was visibly impressed. Sharing a photo from the visit, he posted, “Had a great evening with the Buckeyes defensive staff.” He also told recruiting insiders that both his spring game experience and the follow-up visit made a significant impact. The Buckeyes’ NFL-centric approach, combined with genuine relationship-building, has made a real impression on the five-star linebacker.
Georgia Still in the Lead—for Now
Despite Ohio State’s surge, Georgia remains the team to beat. Atkinson has a strong bond with Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart and linebackers coach Glenn Schumann. Georgia’s history of developing elite defenders and competing for national titles gives them a solid foundation. As Steve Wiltfong put it, Georgia has the tradition, the relationships, and the results.
But Wiltfong also cautioned: “It’s not a foregone conclusion.” The door is wide open.
The Stat Sheet Doesn’t Lie
Atkinson’s numbers speak volumes. With over 475 tackles already in his high school career—including 166 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, and 46 quarterback hurries in his junior season—he’s not just elite, he’s dominant. Any school that lands him will be getting a cornerstone defender.
The Contenders
Georgia: Home-state connection, championship pedigree, elite linebacker development
Ohio State: NFL coaching staff, aggressive recruitment, tradition of defensive excellence
Oregon and Miami: Also in the mix, offering unique opportunities and strong programs
Clemson and Auburn: Not backing down, still pushing hard in the background
With official visits coming soon and more talks scheduled, the recruitment race for Tyler Atkinson is shaping up to be one of the most intense battles of the 2026 cycle. While Georgia has the edge today, Ohio State is closing the gap fast—and every visit, conversation, and impression will count as this high-stakes drama plays out.
