Tragic Loss of Rising Tennis Star Braun Levi Sends Shockwaves Through Sports Community
A devastating tragedy recently struck the world of tennis, as the community mourns the untimely death of 18-year-old Braun Levi—a talented American tennis player with a bright future. The somber news shook the Italian Open in Rome, where players and fans alike paused to remember a life that ended far too soon.
Braun Levi, a high school senior from California, was just weeks away from graduating. His days were filled with dreams, ambitions, and unmatched potential. However, tragedy intervened. Levi was killed in a car accident on May 4 after being struck by a vehicle while on a sidewalk in the 100 block of South Sepulveda Boulevard. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, Levi succumbed to his injuries that Sunday morning.
Levi was more than just a gifted athlete. A recent doubles champion in the Mission League alongside his close friend Cooper Schwartz, he was known for his incredible work ethic, sportsmanship, and vibrant personality. Cooper remembered him as “the greatest work hard, play hard exemplar of all time,” in an emotional Instagram post.
Set to attend the University of Virginia, Levi had both academic and athletic paths laid out before him. His coach, Brian Held, referred to him as “probably the most decorated player to ever play for the school,” while Loyola High School described him as a beloved figure whose energy and spirit left a mark on everyone.
He was a four-year varsity starter, team captain, and had just secured his fourth straight league title days before his passing. But Levi’s legacy extends well beyond the tennis court. He was a young man of compassion and service. He joined his family on global medical missions and donated sports equipment to orphanages and underserved communities.
After a fire devastated his family home in the Palisades earlier this year, Levi turned his personal loss into a mission to help others—organizing a retreat for fellow students who were also affected. He consistently made others feel important and cared for, no matter the circumstance.
Friends and family have taken to social media to honor his life, adopting the motto “Live Like Braun” to keep his memory alive. His Instagram captured snapshots of joy—beach outings, hiking adventures, and moments with loved ones, including a photo with actor Adam Sandler.
In the final month of his life, Levi had climbed into the top 50 of the UTR Sports Boys HS Individual rankings and ranked No. 33 in California. The future was his, and his light shone bright.
Tributes have poured in beneath his last social media post. Friends shared how Levi left a lasting impression, describing his unmatched ability to uplift and energize those around him. One post poignantly read, “Never call someone my brother again,” while others spoke of living life as passionately and lovingly as he did.
Adding to the heartbreak, his death echoes another tragedy at Loyola High School. Two years ago, Ryan Times, a student-athlete and baseball player, died in a train accident. Levi’s loss reopens those wounds and deepens the sorrow in the school community.
Braun Levi was only 18, but the impact he made will resonate for years. His story is one of brilliance, kindness, and humanity. While his journey was cut short, his legacy will continue to inspire others to live with purpose, empathy, and joy—just like Braun did.
