Raiders’ Maxx Crosby Confirms Strong Feelings on $120M Hollywood Actor’s Al Davis Portrayal in Controversy Stricken ‘Madden’

John Madden, known for coaching the Raiders and becoming a football icon, had an unconventional play-calling style—some of his best red zone ideas were sketched out on diner napkins, sometimes next to a stack of bacon and ketchup packets. Despite that chaotic genius, he transitioned into a legendary sports broadcaster, winning 16 Emmy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Emmy. His energetic and offbeat personality is now being adapted into a Hollywood biopic titled Madden, directed by David O. Russell.

The movie aims to capture Madden’s transformation from Super Bowl-winning coach to beloved commentator to the face of one of the most successful sports video game franchises in history. Known for turning catchphrases like “BOOM!” into football lingo, Madden left an unforgettable imprint on sports culture. The film will portray everything from his loud sideline demeanor and deep respect for linemen to his infamous fear of flying.

The casting has stirred up quite a buzz. Nicolas Cage is set to play John Madden, while Christian Bale takes on the role of iconic Raiders owner Al Davis. A promotional image released by Amazon MGM on May 14 showed both actors in character—Cage gripping a football with intensity and Bale dressed sharply, evoking Davis’ signature look. The visual impact was striking, drawing comparisons to a graphic novel scene.

Not everyone is convinced by the casting choices, though. Raiders defensive star Maxx Crosby and teammate Jackson Powers-Johnson recently shared their excitement on The Rush Pod via Instagram. Crosby expressed anticipation for the film, saying he believed Christian Bale would nail the role of Davis. Powers-Johnson added that Nicolas Cage is a solid pick, despite some skepticism from fans.

However, the film’s production hit a rough patch. A supporting actor left the project just two weeks in, citing issues with a controversial scene involving nudity and allegations of offensive language in the script. The departure sparked a swirl of online speculation. While the studio strongly denied the claims, saying no such language was used on set, rumors of creative clashes between the actor and the director surfaced.

Sources close to the film suggested the walkout had more to do with disagreements over a nude locker room scene than anything discriminatory. Tensions reportedly escalated due to the director’s reaction, which some crew members described as unprofessional.

Despite the controversy, production continues. Fans now question whether the drama behind the scenes will overshadow the intent of the film—to honor John Madden’s chaotic brilliance and larger-than-life impact. Known as the most successful coach in Raiders history, Madden’s legacy looms large. Whether the biopic can live up to his legacy or gets lost in off-screen distractions remains to be seen.
