Grayson Murray once wrote in a heartfelt note, “Help the ones that want to be helped but might not have the help they need financially.” Tragically, three years after penning those words, the 30-year-old golfer passed away by suicide on May 25, 2024. His father, Eric Murray, confirmed the devastating news, saying it’s a never-ending nightmare. Despite his struggles, Grayson fought hard to recover. “He did everything he could,” Eric said.
To honor his memory and raise mental health awareness, the Charles Schwab Challenge has made it a tradition to pay tribute to Murray. At the 2025 edition, spectators wore green during the third round to support Mental Health Awareness and celebrate Grayson’s legacy. The green color symbolizes unity in mental health advocacy and reinforces the PGA Tour’s ongoing commitment to wellness and remembrance.
This year’s tribute follows last year’s emotional gesture, where players wore black and red ribbons—colors tied to Grayson’s favorite NHL team, the Carolina Hurricanes, which he proudly represented on Sundays. The PGA Tour community has stood united in honoring him, with Commissioner Jay Monahan emphasizing how deeply Grayson’s loss has impacted everyone on the Tour. He pointed out that many will carry heavy hearts for a long time and urged ongoing support for the Murray family.
In a meaningful development, the Grayson Murray Foundation has partnered with the Ben Hogan Foundation to further mental health advocacy. Their collaboration includes a $20,000 donation to the Ben Hogan Resilience Program, which provides mental health services, education support, and job training for youth who’ve lost a parent to suicide. Additionally, a scholarship will be awarded in Murray’s name, continuing to inspire others through his story.
The Grayson Murray Foundation, created earlier this year, aims to support people facing mental health and addiction challenges. As the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge continues, the golf world unites once again, from green “GM” buttons to special tee times, keeping Grayson’s spirit alive and promoting a vital message about mental health.
