Threat to National Team as Jordan Chiles’ Rival Announces Concerning Update at European Gymnastics Championships

Unexpected Rivalry Erupts in Gymnastics After Floor Controversy and Shocking Withdrawal

What started as a routine scoring dispute in Paris has evolved into one of gymnastics’ most intense and surprising rivalries. Initially, American gymnast Jordan Chiles was awarded the Olympic bronze medal after her team successfully appealed her floor routine’s difficulty score, pushing her just ahead of Romania’s Ana Barbosu. However, this celebration was short-lived. The Court of Arbitration for Sport later ruled that the appeal had been filed too late, reversing the decision and reinstating Barbosu as the rightful bronze medalist. The decision left the gymnastics community confused and divided.

Following the controversy, Barbosu faced a wave of online criticism and bullying. Rather than stepping back, she made headlines with a bold move—announcing in January that she had committed to Stanford University as part of the 2029 NCAA gymnastics recruiting class. This unexpected decision garnered significant attention and support across the gymnastics world.

Just as the buzz around her college plans reached its peak, the European Gymnastics Championships introduced a new twist in the unfolding story. Barbosu was notably absent from the mixed team event, sparking speculation and concern. Inside Gymnastics, a major outlet in the sport, posted on Instagram, noting her surprising withdrawal.

In response to growing questions, the Romanian Gymnastics Federation released a statement addressing the situation. They explained that the decision for both Ana Barbosu and fellow gymnast Nicholas Tarca to sit out the team event was made mutually by the athletes, coaches, and federation leadership. Importantly, they confirmed that Barbosu would still compete in the individual all-around final, where she was expected to contend for a European medal.

Despite this reassurance, the statement failed to fully ease public concern. In fact, the decision raised even more questions about the circumstances surrounding her sudden withdrawal. Many wondered whether the move was part of a larger strategy to focus on individual performance or a sign of deeper issues within the Romanian gymnastics system.

As Barbosu was regarded as a central figure for Romania’s success in both the team and individual events, her absence remains a mystery that continues to fuel debate. The situation is ongoing, and further developments are expected.
