Golf Icons Opening Up About Health Battles
The PGA Tour Champions is becoming just as much a story of perseverance as performance. Legends like John Daly, Steve Stricker, and Cameron Percy are proving that resilience defines greatness—but it’s coming at a steep physical cost.
John Daly’s Relentless Medical Journey
John Daly’s history with surgeries and health scares is well documented. The two-time major winner has undergone 16 surgeries in just four years, largely due to tendon complications. Adding to his trials, Daly also faced bladder cancer—thankfully caught in time.
“I was peeing blood, puking blood… I thought it was my back,” Daly revealed. He later quipped, “I’m like Lazarus — I keep coming back from the dead.” At 58, he considers every day a victory, adding, “Waking up is a win for me.”
Steve Stricker’s Ongoing Health Setback
Steve Stricker, another veteran of the PGA Tour Champions, shared his recent health challenges at the American Family Insurance Championship.
“It’s been a struggle,” Stricker admitted. “I’ve kind of lost some feelings, strength… it’s been hard to get it back.”
Stricker also opened up about his internal conflict—feeling well enough to play but unable to convert that into results.
He’s no stranger to health scares. Back in 2022, Stricker survived a mysterious illness that nearly ended his life, marked by jaundice, severe weight loss, and heart complications. “I’m peeing Coke-colored urine… that was probably the scariest part,” he recalled.
Cameron Percy’s Painful Hidden Injury
While Australian pro Cameron Percy has quietly made 26 consecutive cuts, he’s been dealing with a painful secret: a bone spur in his hip.
“It’s been killing me for two years,” he said. After a recent injection, he finally felt some relief: “It’s amazing how golf is when you’re not in agony.”
Though currently pain-free, Percy isn’t sure how long it’ll last. “It could last until tomorrow… then I’ll be in agony again.”
Redefining Resilience in Golf
Despite the physical toll, Daly, Stricker, and Percy continue to grind it out—showcasing a version of toughness rarely celebrated in golf.
When shots don’t land and swings falter, it’s easy to forget the real battles being fought behind the scenes. But for these seasoned pros, it’s not just about playing through pain—it’s about rewriting what it means to be a resilient athlete.
