First-Time Eddie Invitee Annie Reickert Trained at Pumping Jaws
Annie Reickert, the 24-year-old waterwoman from Maui, has been quietly making waves in the surf and foil world. Back in 2019, at just 18, she entered her first Jaws event during a fierce swell that left some seasoned pros battered. Despite the extreme conditions, she pushed through and placed third behind Paige Alms and Felicity Palmateer — an experience that fueled her passion for big waves.
Growing up on Maui’s shores, Annie was immersed in ocean life from an early age, catching waves on her dad’s board by age two and later training under legends like Robby Naish and Dave Kalama. She’s done it all: surfing, stand-up paddling, foiling, and wing foiling — sometimes even pulling 10-foot airs. Her deep bond with the ocean serves as both a meditation and a lifestyle.
After overcoming a serious shoulder injury, Annie made a strong return to competition. In December, she surfed her first Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, finishing as the top-ranking woman (29th overall). Her preparation included a series of powerful sessions at Jaws, including one memorable ride alongside her boyfriend, Albee Layer.
Most recently, Annie took part in an 8-mile downwind foil race benefiting children with special needs — a favorite event of hers — and won her division. Whether it’s for competition or pure joy, one thing’s for sure: if you’re looking for Annie, she’s probably out in the ocean doing what she loves.
