Haunting Underwater Voice Remains Mystery 25 Years Later (Listen)

**Haunting “Julia” Sound Still Unexplained 25 Years Later**

The ocean holds countless mysteries, and one of the most haunting remains a strange recording from 1999 that some say sounds eerily like a woman’s voice. Nicknamed *“Julia”* by NOAA researchers, the sound was captured in the eastern equatorial Pacific and has puzzled scientists and conspiracy theorists alike for a quarter of a century.

Online, theories have ranged from the humorous (“T-Rex didn’t go extinct, he just moved into the ocean”) to the fantastical (“Release the Kraken!”). Others point to natural phenomena like underwater volcanic activity or seismic events.

NOAA’s own analysis suggests the source may have been a massive iceberg grounding on the seafloor somewhere between Bransfield Straits and Cape Adare in Antarctica. Still, with much of the deep ocean unexplored, “Julia” has taken on an almost mythical status — a reminder that some of Earth’s most captivating mysteries lie far beneath the waves.
