Hawaiian Waterman Dies in Car Crash: Remembering an ‘Ambassador of Aloha’

Fullerton “Hopena” Pokipala, a well-known Hawaiian waterman and husband to former Miss Hawaii Allie Chu, has tragically passed away at the age of 30 following a car accident in Waimanalo, on Oahu’s southeastern coast.

According to police reports, the accident occurred around 8:00 p.m. on Saturday night. Pokipala was driving a utility task vehicle (UTV) when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the Kalanianaole Highway intersection. His vehicle was struck by a 74-year-old driver, causing the UTV to flip. Pokipala was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, family and friends remembered Pokipala for his generosity, love, and passion for the ocean. His uncle, Clif Botelho, described him as “an ambassador of aloha,” someone who always put others first. Botelho shared that Hopena would give anything to anyone in need and embodied the spirit of kindness and selflessness.

Pokipala recently married Allie Chu, former Miss Hawaii and Miss Hawaii USA. The couple had been planning a formal wedding reception for March and were looking forward to building a future together. Botelho expressed comfort in knowing that his nephew had fulfilled one of his biggest dreams — marrying the love of his life.

Beyond his family life, Pokipala lived a dynamic and adventurous lifestyle. He worked as a longshoreman, launched his own oyster-shucking business, and had aspirations of entering politics. He was also passionate about surfing and was known for riding some of the biggest waves in Hawaii. On his 30th birthday, he shared a video of himself tackling a massive wave at Waimea Bay, a testament to his fearless spirit.

“He was a thrill-seeker, surfed some of the biggest waves,” Botelho said while reflecting on his nephew’s adventurous nature.

Fullerton “Hopena” Pokipala will be remembered not only for his achievements but also for the love, joy, and aloha spirit he brought to those around him. His passing is deeply felt across his family, friends, and the Hawaiian community.
