Inside Lewis Hamilton’s name change and huge fortune as F1 star hits new heights

Lewis Hamilton is determined to move past a difficult few weeks as he prepares for the United States Grand Prix on Sunday. The Formula 1 star has been mourning the loss of his beloved dog, Roscoe, who died in September after a severe battle with pneumonia. Roscoe had been placed in a coma during treatment, and Hamilton made the painful decision to let him go after four days on life support.

Now, the seven-time world champion hopes to regain his spirits with a strong performance for Ferrari, aiming to finish the season on a positive note. It has been a challenging year for Hamilton, with his best result so far being a fourth-place finish at the British Grand Prix in July.

Honouring His Mother

Back in 2022, Hamilton announced plans to add his mother’s maiden name, Larbalestier, to his full name in tribute to her. He revealed his intention to honour his mother, Carmen, saying he didn’t understand why women lose their surnames after marriage and wanted her name to live on. As of 2025, it remains unclear whether the name change has been officially completed.

Hamilton’s Wealth

According to the 2025 Sunday Times Rich List, Hamilton remains the richest active sports star in Britain, with an estimated net worth of about £385 million. His switch from Mercedes to Ferrari has significantly boosted his income, as he reportedly earns around £50 million annually on his two-year deal — surpassing Max Verstappen’s £47 million contract with Red Bull.

In addition to his racing salary, Hamilton earns from sponsorships, his fashion ventures, and a minority ownership stake in the NFL’s Denver Broncos.

Saying Goodbye to Roscoe

Hamilton described saying goodbye to Roscoe as the “hardest decision” of his life. The bulldog had been his companion for many years and was a familiar presence in the paddock. Following Roscoe’s passing, Hamilton wrote on social media that he was heartbroken but grateful for the years they shared.

He shared:

“After four days on life support, fighting with every bit of strength he had, I had to make the hardest decision of my life and say goodbye to Roscoe. He never stopped fighting until the end. Bringing him into my life was the best decision I ever made, and I’ll forever cherish our memories together.”

Hamilton also expressed empathy for others who have lost pets, acknowledging how deeply painful the experience can be. Despite the grief, he remains thankful for the love and support fans have shown toward Roscoe over the years.

As Hamilton prepares to race at the United States Grand Prix, he carries both the weight of loss and the motivation to end the season with renewed strength and focus.
