“Why Did Giants Legends Shut Down Abdul Carter’s Jersey Requests—and What Made Phil Simms’ Daughter Hang Up the Phone?

ARTICLE:

From Draft Star to Jersey Drama
Abdul Carter may have been the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, but he’s already learning a hard truth in New York: some jersey numbers are sacred. And trying to wear them? That’s a battle even a top rookie can’t win.

Denied by a Defensive Legend
Carter’s first request was to wear No. 56—the iconic number of Giants Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor. But LT wasn’t having it. According to reports, Taylor quickly turned down the idea, making it clear that some numbers are off-limits until greatness is proven.

Next Attempt: No. 11—and the Simms Family Revolt
After the No. 56 rejection, Carter moved on to No. 11, the number he wore at Penn State and one made legendary by Giants QB Phil Simms. Chris Simms, Phil’s son, originally thought the family would approve. But then came a dramatic twist.

Chris revealed on Pro Football Talk that his sister Deirdre and mother Diana strongly objected to anyone wearing Phil’s number again. Things got personal, fast.

> “My sister calls and says, ‘Christopher, what do you think Dad should do?’ I said, ‘It’d be cool if Abdul Carter wore it.’ She goes, ‘How dare you! I don’t want to talk to you,’ and hangs up.”

Even Phil Simms Felt the Pressure
Chris added that his dad texted him soon after, joking that his wife and daughter were “killing him” over the issue. The family decision was clear: No. 11 stays retired in their hearts, even if not officially.

Gronk Weighs In
NFL legend Rob Gronkowski also jumped into the debate.

> “You gotta prove yourself first. LT is a legend. I’m glad he shut that down,” Gronk said on a recent podcast with Julian Edelman.

So What Number Will Carter Wear?
At this point, Carter is still undecided on what jersey he’ll wear for the Giants. But one thing is clear: the kid doesn’t lack confidence. He’s aiming high—and maybe that’s exactly what New York needs on defense.
