More than 1500 gather to honor a life of service
A sea of mourners gathered at the Sleeman Sporting Complex in Brisbane today to pay tribute to Queensland Police Inspector Jay Notaro, who vanished while surfing at Broken Head near Byron Bay in March. Though his body was never recovered, his legacy as a dedicated officer, beloved friend, and cherished family member was remembered with raw emotion and deep respect.
A legacy of dedication and service
Inspector Notaro, 45, dedicated 23 years to the Queensland Police Service, working in Townsville, Brisbane, Moranbah, the Gold Coast, and Ipswich. His impact stretched far beyond the badge, with colleagues describing him as a leader, mentor, and friend.
“Jay was a son, a brother, a nephew, a godfather… a friend and a good mate to many,” said Queensland Police Chaplain Jeff Baills. “We are the ones who were honoured to have known and served alongside him.”
Tributes from the heart
The memorial was filled with tributes from family and friends, reflecting on Notaro’s courage, humour, and generosity. His surfboard—recovered shortly after he went missing—was placed at the heart of the service, surrounded by floral arrangements from loved ones.
His sister, Hayley Tunny, moved the crowd to tears, saying, “You weren’t just my brother… you were my hero. Until we meet again. I’ll see you in my dreams. I love you, bro.”
A community mourns
Deputy Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy addressed the gathering, calling Notaro a “policeman’s policeman” and a true pillar of the force. Queensland Premier David Crisafulli, a personal friend, was also in attendance and laid a wreath in his memory.
Disappearance still a mystery
Notaro disappeared on March 25, just one day after his 45th birthday. He had gone surfing at Broken Head, a spot known for its beauty—and its danger. His surfboard was later found onshore, but despite extensive search efforts, his body was never found.
A symbol of courage and camaraderie
Today’s memorial painted a portrait of a man who lived with purpose and left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. As the Queensland Police Force, friends, and family continue to grieve, they also carry forward the strength and compassion that defined Jay Notaro’s life.
