Golf Journalist Doesn’t Spare Rory McIlroy Over His Poor Treatment of Reporters at PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy’s Silence Sparks Backlash Amid PGA Championship Struggles

At the 2025 PGA Championship, Rory McIlroy has been making headlines—but not for the reasons fans might have hoped. Instead of drawing attention for his play at Quail Hollow, the spotlight is firmly on his decision to avoid media interactions throughout the tournament.

For four consecutive rounds, McIlroy declined to speak to the press, beginning with a tough opening round and continuing through the weekend. Fans were particularly hopeful he’d break the silence after Sunday’s round, but he walked off without a word once again. His final round—an uninspiring 1-over-par 72—marked his worst PGA Championship performance in nearly a decade, making the silence even more glaring.

His body language during Sunday’s round appeared to reflect his frustrations, but it was his continued refusal to address the media that drew the most criticism. Notably, golf journalist Michael McEwan voiced his disappointment on social media, calling McIlroy’s behavior “really poor form.” He noted that while other, less popular players often receive criticism for skipping post-round interviews once, McIlroy had done it four times in a row.

McEwan’s critique didn’t end there. He pointed out that today’s players enjoy the massive benefits and exposure that the Tiger Woods era brought to golf. Yet when it comes to fulfilling basic responsibilities—like speaking to the press—many fall short of the standard Woods set.

McIlroy’s silence has now raised questions among fans and commentators alike. Is he dodging accountability in a moment of poor form, or is he quietly prioritizing his mental health in a high-pressure environment? Either way, the public seems to expect more from one of the sport’s most prominent figures. As the dust settles from Quail Hollow, McIlroy will eventually have to answer—not just about his performance, but about his silence.
