Kelly Slater Passes the Torch: Surf Legend Surprises Erin Brooks With Her First SURFER Magazine Cover

Kelly Slater Delivers a Moment to Remember
As the sun set over Lower Trestles, the last few people on the beach wondered if surfing legend Kelly Slater would make a surprise appearance. Right before dark, Slater arrived in style, rolling up on an e-bike after a long flight. His mission? To hand the newest issue of SURFER Magazine—and its cover—to the sport’s next breakout star, Erin Brooks.

A New Era for Women’s Surfing
The moment was special for Brooks, who had no idea she would become the face of the iconic magazine’s latest edition. The cover, featuring Brooks executing a powerful frontside air at Rocky Point, marks a significant milestone—not just for her, but for the future of women’s progressive surfing. “It honestly doesn’t feel real,” Brooks said, still in disbelief after the reveal. “It’s such an honor. I know that y’all don’t make too many of these anymore, so I’m just so happy to be on the cover. It was so cool that [Kelly] came down here to surprise me.”

A Tradition of Greatness
Kelly Slater, who was on the previous cover, compared Brooks’ achievement to his own first cover at 17 years old. He shared a bit of nostalgia, reflecting on his own journey and offering Brooks simple but powerful advice for the upcoming competition at Lowers: “Win.”

Looking Ahead
The new SURFER Magazine, celebrating its 65th anniversary, drops on June 13th and highlights the rapid rise of young female surfers pushing boundaries in the sport. As Brooks and her peers continue to innovate, the torch has officially been passed, signaling a bright future for the next generation of surfing stars.
