Phil Mickelson Makes Honest Confession on Life’s ‘Wicked Turn’ After Collapse at LIV Golf Dallas

Phil Mickelson’s performance at the 2025 LIV Golf Dallas event at Maridoe Golf Club has been anything but smooth. Despite a strong start, the 54-year-old faltered late in the opening round, finishing with a 5-over-par 77 to tie for 46th place. Through 15 holes, Mickelson was 1-under par and showing solid play off the tee and around the greens. His driving averaged a competitive 304 yards. However, back-to-back mistakes—a double bogey followed by a quadruple bogey—caused his round to unravel.

The next morning, Mickelson addressed the tough finish in a reflective post on social media. He wrote, “Many have said golf parallels life and yesterday was another great example of that. At any moment life can also take a wicked turn so appreciate all we have, continue to be present and enjoy the moment.” The message resonated with fans as a sign of his maturity and perspective, extending beyond just his round in Dallas.

Mickelson’s comments came on the heels of another emotional moment: missing the cut at the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont. Entering the tournament, he had suggested it might be his final appearance at the event, as his exemption from winning the 2021 PGA Championship is nearing its end. His 8-over performance added weight to the idea that his career Grand Slam quest might be over.

Still, Mickelson hasn’t closed the door on another U.S. Open appearance. In a follow-up interview, he said, “I actually think I’m playing well enough… I’m in the other three majors for a lot of years, and it could very well get me into the U.S. Open again. I don’t want to say that it is my last.” While the path back may be uncertain, Mickelson’s determination is evident.

His recent statements—both after LIV Dallas and the U.S. Open—underscore a mindset focused on staying grounded, resilient, and optimistic. Despite challenges and setbacks, Mickelson remains committed to competing and continuing his storied career for as long as possible.
