Red Bull Fears Verstappen Could Leave After 2025 Despite Horner Exit
Dutch F1 journalist Erik van Haren has revealed that Red Bull’s top officials are deeply concerned about the possibility of Max Verstappen departing the team after the 2025 season. Although the reigning world champion remains under contract until 2028, his ongoing discussions with Mercedes have stirred uncertainty about his long-term future.
Van Haren maintains that no final decision has been made yet regarding Verstappen’s next move, but clarity is expected soon. Contrary to speculation, the dismissal of team principal Christian Horner is not seen as a guarantee that Verstappen will remain with Red Bull. Reports claiming Horner’s exit was a condition for Verstappen to stay have been dismissed by all involved.
Behind the scenes, Red Bull’s leadership—especially managing director Oliver Mintzlaff—is reportedly anxious about Verstappen’s potential departure. Mintzlaff was a key figure in the decision to remove Horner, a move that was also supported by Helmut Marko. However, Horner retained his position earlier due to backing from majority shareholder Chalerm Yoovidhya.
Van Haren also noted that Verstappen is reconsidering his future with Red Bull, while actively communicating with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff. Still, this doesn’t confirm an immediate switch, and any decision is expected to be revealed during the upcoming summer break. For now, Verstappen is concentrating on the next two races in Hungary and Belgium.
