Steelers Coach Confirms Jalen Ramsey’s Role as Rookie Prepares for Week 2 Game

Losing five-time Pro Bowler Minkah Fitzpatrick was a huge setback for the Steelers, but the addition of Jalen Ramsey has quickly proven to be a major boost. Ramsey has brought elite talent and the flexibility Pittsburgh needs in its secondary. That plan became clear in the win over the Jets, where he delivered a standout performance.

During the game, Joey Porter Jr. went down with a hamstring injury, leaving uncertainty about his availability moving forward. Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin expressed confidence that Brandin Echols could step in, allowing Ramsey to continue moving around the secondary. Austin emphasized that the defense would “absolutely” retain its full capabilities.

The Jets game showed just how versatile Ramsey can be. He lined up at every secondary position and was one of three defenders to play every snap. Even with injuries, Austin remained assured that Ramsey’s adaptability gives the Steelers options to adjust based on opponents and situations. Echols also contributed in limited snaps, making key plays late by breaking up two passes on the Jets’ final drive.

Ramsey’s role will continue to shift from week to week, depending on the matchup. This versatility is especially valuable with the defense missing several players. Austin also noted that aside from Echols, rookie Yahya Black will see an expanded role. The 6’6”, 340-pound fifth-round pick struggled at times in his debut, missing tackles and letting Justin Fields slip away, but the coaching staff remains optimistic.

Black’s opportunity comes due to Derrick Harmon’s MCL injury. Although Harmon was expected to make an immediate impact as the Steelers’ first pick, he will likely return around Week 5. Until then, Black will carry the responsibility of filling in while gaining valuable experience.

The Steelers’ ability to lean on Ramsey’s versatility and develop younger players could be the difference-maker as they aim to stay competitive this season.
