At the 2024 Monte-Carlo Masters, Novak Djokovic got into a fight with the spectators, but he later stated that he isn’t actually looking for trouble.
The Italian crowd turns out to support their players in Monte Carlo, where the Serbian faced off against Lorenzo Musetti. That applied this time as well, and Djokovic had to contend with Musetti and the throng.
Boos were plenty as well, and Djokovic even had a little fun planning some of them as they arrived. On the court, however, he responded the best, defeating Musetti in two sets despite a sluggish start.
When questioned about the jeers following the match, Djokovic said he wasn’t looking for controversy, which is usually the case when he plays. Nonetheless, there are clearly differences in people’s views on that.
Yes, I believe your description of it is accurate. I make an effort to channel the energy into something that will benefit me. I am not seeking confrontation with a mob. You know, I’m not coming out. Alright, give me a whistling motion, and I’ll perform better. That’s not how I think about things.”
However, I’ll respond in kind if I feel that someone is reacting in a way that I don’t think is fair or that I deserve, or if I don’t think there is any way to explain it. You know, I was raised with the attitude that you should stand your ground if someone is wronging you.”
Djokovic makes a valid point when he says that boos directed at him frequently happen for no apparent reason. It’s just how some of the supporters choose to see it, particularly when they’re supporting the other player, as is often the case for the 24-time Grand Slam winner, who will play Alex de Minaur in Monaco next.
