According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool has begun to close the gap on their Premier League opponents in the pursuit of Piero Hincapie, who is rumoured to be a target for Tottenham.

Hincapie is still being linked to leaving Bayer Leverkusen in January. He is currently Xabi Alonso’s third-choice behind Edmond Tapsoba and Odilon Kossounou.

In their hunt for a new center-half, Ange Postecoglou’s team is keeping a careful eye on the 21-year-old’s circumstances, according to a Daily Mirror story published last month.

A few days ago, Florian Plettenberg, a reporter for Sky Sports Germany, gave Tottenham a lift when he revealed that the Ecuadorian is dissatisfied with his current circumstances at Bay Arena and is eager to look for a new challenge in January.

Tottenham is trailing Liverpool in the Hincapie race.

But according to CaughtOffside, Liverpool is currently expressing the greatest interest in Hincapie thus far.

The Leverkusen star is a great fan of Jurgen Klopp, according to the source, which is why the Reds are currently “working to move ahead of their rivals” after designating the player as a “priority.”

According to the report, the Bundesliga team is unwilling to let go of Hincapie and will ask for at least €70 million (£60.4 million) when the player is traded next month.

Given that Romero and Van de Ven will likely remain Postecoglou’s first-choice centre back duo, I can not see Spurs spending more than £50 million on a centre back.

Spurs may prioritise buying a right-footed central defender next month because Davies has shown he can be a capable backup at left center-back. I believe they will search for a young defender in the £20–£40 million area.
