Ange Postecoglou cautions that “nothing magical” will occur during the January transfer window, but he feels Tottenham’s team is “nowhere near” good enough to continue playing their all-action style.
Despite no top-tier team playing fewer games this season, the Spurs manager argued he requires a deeper squad of players than his Premier League opponents due to their high-octane approach.
Spurs were missing nine players due to injury or suspension when they lost 4-2 to Brighton on Thursday night. Things will only get worse as captain Son Heung-min, Yves Bissouma, and Pape Sarr will be heading to the Asia Cup and Africa Cup of Nations following their match against Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve.
Postecoglou, who fielded a four-man defensive line against Brighton made up entirely of full-backs, is desperate to add a center-back when the transfer window opens next week. He has expressed interest in Liverpool defender Joe Gomez. He’s already taming expectations, though.
“There won’t be any miraculous events during the January window,” Postecoglou declared.
“All we have to do is keep building,” With this team, we have one window of opportunity to make adjustments and go in a new direction. It’s a compliment to the guys that we are in this situation.
“Building a side that will get us to where we want is ultimately what it’s about; we’ll see what we can do in January.”
Hugo Lloris, the former captain of the Spurs, is about to leave the team after 11 years as he is close to signing a free agent contract with MLS team Los Angeles FC, according to Mail Sport.
‘Obviously there’s something going, but I’ve been focused on the game,’ Postecoglou continued. We should hear something in the coming days, I’m sure.
Even though Spurs have only played 20 games this season compared to top-four rivals Newcastle, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Man City who have played at least eight more, the head coach lamented the club’s injury crisis for their lethargic performance at the Amex Stadium and believes ‘Ange Ball’ is more draining than styles of other sides.
