The left-back Kai Wagner’s contract expired at the end of December, making him a free agent. However, he has since re-signed with MLS team Philadelphia Union. Kai Wagner has been frequently linked to Leeds United.

Wagner, 26, joined the club in February 2019 and has been a star in America for the past five years. He went on to play 170 games for Philadelphia, contributing to 39 goals and scoring seven of them.

Over the past few years, Leeds, Brentford, and West Ham have all reportedly been linked to Wagner; a recent story said that all three teams were considering enticing the German assist machine to England.

In fact, Daniel Farke has stated that he wants to sign a left-back, even before Luke Ayling joined Middlesbrough and Djed Spence returned to Tottenham. Leeds’s full-back depth is poor.

Wagner, though, is now out of the question. After becoming a free agency in December, Wagner made the decision to re-sign with Philadelphia. He inked a two-year contract with a three-year option that would expire in 2027.

Leeds still needs to add more full-backs. Given that our present choices are midfielders Archie Grey and Jamie Shackleton, a right-back might be more of a requirement. Sam Byram is currently being deployed on the left.

On the left, Junior Firpo is still a possibility. But Leeds need to add one or two players to each side of the back four since Byram, Firpo, and Shackleton are prone to injuries.

Ben Johnson of West Ham has surfaced as a fresh target for Leeds, while Connor Roberts of Burnley is also a target; the Clarets are prepared to “consider offers” for the Wales international. Leeds still has work to be done.
