The starting lineup for Leeds United against Cardiff City on Saturday promises to be exciting. In the lead-up to the match in Wales, Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe participated in a sprint race during training.

The 30-year-old Bamford has started the last two games after having to watch from the sidelines for 16 of his 18 outings this season. Both games ended in 3-0 victories over Peterborough and Birmingham City.

Bamford opened the score at Elland Road against Birmingham with a header after failing to score since April 2023. Then there was his incredible volley against Peterborough, which has won praise.

Tony Bellew praised the attacker, saying it surpassed Diego Maradona’s “goal of the century.” Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer also agreed. Bamford said Archie Grey said he would be up for the Puskas prize.

Naturally, though, Piroe, who signed with Leeds in the summer, has occasionally been outstanding and has started 22 straight Championship games since then. In 23 league games, he has nine goals in the Championship.

Daniel Farke needs to decide who should come first. Without Piroe or Bamford, Leeds will undoubtedly be trying to improve on their 2-2 opening day result against Cardiff.

Does he stick to what he knows, and bring a fresh Piroe into the side ahead of Bamford. Or does he stick with Bamford, who is known for being a hit man who thrives on spurts of form?

He probably saw training this week, and in a video that was posted to the team’s LUTV channel (1.05), Bamford and Piroe compete in a race. Bamford triumphs and laughs as he does so.
