If West Ham United wants to recruit Marcus Edwards from Sporting Lisbon, we will need to make a significant January expenditure.

Marcus Edwards has been strongly connected to a Premier League comeback in recent months, and it appears that West Ham is keeping a close eye on him during the January transfer window.

With Mohammed Kudus away at the AFCON with Ghana and Jarrod Bowen, Michail Antonio, and Lucas Paqueta presently sidelined due to injuries, Hammers manager David Moyes is desperately searching for attacking reinforcements.

It is anticipated that none of those players will return and be available for selection until at least the middle of the next month.

That will undoubtedly cause issues for West Ham, and Moyes is determined to add more players before our next Premier League match on January 21st.

But now, Edwards’s next move will be extremely challenging.

Marcus Edwards’ transfer price is communicated by Sporting to West Ham

It appears that the Portuguese team is unwilling to allow the former Tottenham winger to go this month on the cheap.

Sporting won’t allow Edwards to leave for anything less than the €60 million (£51 million) release clause that has been placed into his current contract, according to Portuguese media site A Bola.

It is evident that the Hammers will not spend that kind of money on a new acquisition during the January transfer window, therefore Moyes will have to move on to the next one.

It’s unfortunate because I believe Edwards would have been a fantastic player for us.

In the summer of 2019, Edwards joined Vitória Guimarães on a free transfer from Spurs, where he scored 20 goals and provided 14 assists in 96 games.

Afterwards, in January 2022, he moved on to Sporting, where he has been a major asset for the Portuguese powerhouses.

In 91 games for Sporting (Transfermarkt), the 25-year-old winger from Enfield has 21 goals and 22 assists to his credit.

Marcus Edwards is a technically gifted left-footed right winger with quickness to spare. He consistently contributes with assists and has a good eye for goal.

Marcus Edwards, sadly for West Ham, will not be joining us during the January transfer window. Maybe in the summer we’ll try to get him.
