PGA Tour pro Robert MacIntyre joked his father was ‘a bit out of his depth’ after the golfer’s father stepped in at the last minute to caddie in Can.

PGA Tour rookie Robert MacIntyre joked his father was ‘a bit out of his depth’ after he stepped in at the last minute to caddie at the RBC Canadian Open.

The Scot is going through a transition period at the moment and is yet to find a full-time looper.

MacIntyre revealed after the opening round at Hamilton Golf & Country Club his father answered an emergency phone call last Saturday.

And he subsequently hopped on a plane on Sunday morning and made the 3,500 mile trip from Oban to Ontario.

The European golfer started well, posting a bogey-free six-under 70 to sit in a tie for fourth.

Rory McIlroy was four strokes adrift of leader David Skinns.

Before the first round, his relationship status with Amanda Balionis was also said to have been confirmed.

MacIntyre told reporters it was the first time his dad Dougie was on the bag since he went to Tour School in 2018.

“I’m going in transition between caddies,” he said.

“I’m trying to work it all out. Yeah, it was an emergency phone call on Saturday, and he stepped up to the plate. He’s a good golfer himself, but this kind of level, he’s a bit out of his depth.

“I thought he did a great job and kept it so simple. The numbers are what they are. Go and add a good shot to that number, and the results should be half decent.”

“Ryan’s been a big help to me”

MacIntyre has made no secret he has found life difficult on the PGA Tour so far.

Earlier this month, the Scot said he regards the DP World Tour as more of a ‘family’.

“You come out here to the PGA Tour, and it’s all so unfamiliar,” he previously said. “There’s less chatting.”

It appears MacIntyre has leant on Ryan Fox for help.

Fox, like MacIntyre, was one of the 10 DP World Tour players who earned their full PGA Tour cards last season.

“We’re kind of on our own a lot more,” he said.

“We’re with our families, our friends as much as we can. But Ryan’s been a great help to me, especially going through the Visa process.

“He managed to get me fast-tracked through a guy he knows. I think the European guys have really stuck together and trying to push each other on.”

MacIntyre added: “We’re all good players. It’s the game of golf. It’s no different out here. It’s just a different environment. We’re learning. If our good golf turns up, we can all compete out here.
