Newcastle United appears to be in need of a new goalkeeper as the January transfer window draws nearer.

Nick Pope is not with the Magpies at the moment since he had surgery earlier this month. He will be sidelined for several months after dislocating his shoulder in the 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

As a result, Martin Dubravka, who was substituted for Pope at St. James’ Park last year, has returned to the team.

The 34-year-old’s comeback to the team has not been easy. With just one clean sheet in seven games and 14 goals against, he has not been a very good goalie.

With Dubravka in front of them, the Newcastle defense appears less and less at ease, which is why the team may view the January transfer window as an opportunity to bring in a successor.

David De Gea was connected to Newcastle United.
David De Gea is one player who has received a lot of attention. After being cut loose by Manchester United at the end of the previous campaign, he is currently a free agent.

According to reports, the 33-year-old would like to transfer to Tyneside, and several commentators have urged Newcastle to try to sign the Spaniard.

Moving for De Gea makes a lot of sense considering his extraordinary talent (Eddie Howe once termed him “outstanding”) and the fact he is a free agency. Newcastle, though, isn’t entirely convinced that they should welcome the Premier League champion to St. James’ Park.

What makes the Magpies doubt De Gea

The Daily Mail claims that Newcastle is thinking of pursuing De Gea in January. They also note that the fact that he has been a free agent for the last six months raises some worries.

It may take him some time to catch up on the game given how long he has been away from it. Is Newcastle going to be able to wait? Right now, they need someone who can change things.

It is also perplexing because he is still a free agent. It’s odd that no one has been able to work things out with him because he’s a fantastic goalie. That implies that he is asking for too much money, or that he hasn’t found a move that appeals to him.

It seems that Newcastle appeals, but it’s unclear if the feeling is shared. From Newcastle’s point of view, there is some uncertainty, which is to be expected. In addition to having high pay demands, he may be looking for a longer-term contract than six months. Newcastle, on the other hand, merely wants a stopgap till Pope has fully recovered.

However, Newcastle must act swiftly if they are serious about acquiring a goalkeeper, which implies they must decide on De Gea right away.
