With Fabian Schar’s contract set to expire in the summer, Newcastle United is hopeful of securing an extension for the important defender in the near future.

According to Football Insider, Eddie Howe, who is still eager to keep the defender, will likely try to get Fabian Schar to sign a new contract with Newcastle United. The Magpies manager is keen to retain the key player, whose contract with the 31-year-old Swiss international expires in the summer.

Newcastle United is still a work in progress and has enough work in front of them in the transfer market as they build their squad. Eddie Howe has not made significant investments in his defense, particularly in central defense, because he still has faith in Sven Botman and Fabian Schar.

After the latter’s injury this season, things have become more realistic, and Howe is keen to strengthen the position’s depth before January. Jamal Lascelles, the forgotten club captain, has been relied upon by Newcastle United to fill in for Botman. Together with Schar, he has performed admirably thus far.

Schar is a key member of Howe’s core defensive group, which he would like to keep. Newcastle United and the defensive mainstay, who currently earns £40,000 per week, have been in contract talks for some time. The current deal expires in the summer.

They can’t wait to sign him to a new deal and start paying him £40,000 a week. Schar has done well working with Botman. He played a crucial role in Newcastle United’s fourth-place result from the previous campaign.

The team intends to step up its efforts to improve his contract status and hopes to reach an agreement on an extension. Once that is resolved, Howe will pressure the team to bring in a new defender; Jean-Clair Todibo is one name that has been mentioned.

Howe plans ahead carefully because he wants a shrewd backfield. The 21-year-old sensation from Le Havre, Arouna Sangante, is also being linked to Newcastle United. While he is a good option going forward, he typically lacks the experience of playing football in the major leagues.

Schar and Botman allow Howe to fill the void in the squad by bringing in players like Sangante. The Magpies will continue to look for a new center-back in January and will remain busy. With Schar’s possible extension, they will probably meet their goal and retain the 31-year-old for a few years.
