Eddie Howe and his staff will put in a lot of overtime in preparation for the January transfer window. At the halfway point of the Premier League season, Newcastle United has a plethora of options for strengthening their roster, but who will they try to add?

According to reports, the Magpies are interested in a highly regarded Serie A box-to-box midfield player. But they’re not the only ones; moves for the player have also been connected to Chelsea and Liverpool. Newcastle and a Manchester City player are also in “advanced talks” to be acquired by Newcastle.

Newcastle United is interested in signing Nicolo Barella.

But Inter Milan, where he is currently playing, seems to be aware of the attention he is drawing. They do not want one of their main players to exit the San Siro in the middle of the season – as such, they have offered him a new deal that will last until 2028 to ward off any prospective suitors. His current deal will expire in 2026.

Toon is in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Kalvin Phillips of Manchester City.

After spending £42 million to join Manchester City in 2022, Kalvin Phillips has faded into obscurity at the club from Leeds United. Now that City is looking to let him go, TEAMtalk reports that Newcastle and him are reportedly in “advanced talks” to relocate to St. James’ Park.

At the moment, Newcastle lacks a superior defensive midfield player. Phillips would be able to play this position flawlessly and move on from his turbulent experience at the Etihad Stadium if he can regain form for the Toon.
